Childhood overweight and obesity in America continues to gain its place as one of the top contributors for severe health problems, serious emotional and social problems, and even premature death. Children today prefer watching television, playing video games, or surfing the internet to playing outdoors, Big Macs and fries to healthier foods, and automobile rides rather than walking or riding their bikes. The lack of fitness, proper diets, and body image awareness in children contribute to many long-term, life threatening health problems. Children need to understand the benefits of healthy bodies. They need to be educated and offered opportunities to prevent and reduce the disease of childhood overweight and obesity.

The problem of obesity in America especially with respect to children has gained national attention over the last several years. There seems to be numerous factors that have contributed to this national epidemic. The questions about the reasons and effects of obesity are many.

What factors have contributed to the prevalence of obesity in the United Sates? Why have the parents of obese children allowed this weight gain? Has the educational system through physical education adequately addressed childhood obesity? How has the food industry contributed to this problem? What are the immediate health problems of obesity? What are the long-term effects of children being overweight? Are there emotional issues that cause this problem? What are the social consequences of being obese as a child? The last and most significant question may be the most important. Are we as a society able to combat the problem of obesity in our children?

The purpose of this paper will be to thoroughly review the factors, causes, and solutions regarding childhood obesity. It was also make parents more aware of the effects of obesity and what they should do to prevent it.

I agree with your topic on how childhood obesity in America is growing rapidly, and I also think that it is a good topic to talk about. I have only one suggestion to make and that is who is your targeting audience? I can't see a counter argument for childhood obesity, but can I suggest that childhood obesity may be from what they see and what they do not see. Children might not see their parents active so they aren't active, thus making them fat. So, maybe you can say that childhood obesity is caused from lack of influence. -Kaycee

Obesity in general is becoming the number one killer in america, due to complications with the "lifestyle." I think this needs be be addressed, especially starting with children. For one of my recent papers (the analogy one) for this class I used a lot of sites that may be helpful, and in all of them there were some really good statistics. I think you need to use a lot of statistics to really emphasize there is a problem and it affects everyone. I also think you should look into obesity here at Penn State. Maybe you can use this information so the class and your audience can relate to your topic even more. -JenLo
