"The Four Freedoms"

Franklin Delno Roosevelts the four freedoms bring to mind what makes America so great. Freedom of speech, freedom of religon, fear, want and expression. This historic piece has been remembered by many presidents because it can be refered to intime of war. Pearl harbor is one event that trigger in my mind when I read the passage, it was a time of panic that america had been surprised. Most recently September 11, 2001 president bush's speech refered to this speech.

Rewrite Of TheDrizzle Personal Narrative"
Hello my name is Colin Smith and I lived in a little town outside of Philadelphila called Audubon Pa. I am majoring in Hotel Reseraunt Management, but I might be switching to Business. I am not huge football fan but I enjoy watching Penn state. I love music and i enjoying listening to almost everything.

"Response to Martin Luther King's Letter from the Birmingham Jail."

In this letter Martin Luther King was trying to explain his view of equal rights for whites and blacks to the clergymen. King's message through out his entire campagin for equal rights was non-violient protests. When he is talking to the clergy men it is not an angry letter which many people besides him would have trouble through all the suffering they put upon the black race. King was an amazing leader, who complemented his oppressers instead of critszing them. Segergation was a horrible time in american history which should never be forgotten. Martin Luther King's letter brings realization to the time and how much he impacted history.

Hello my name is Colin Smith. I grew up in State College living with my mom attending State College Area highschool and now I have decided to start Penn State. I graduated highschool this summer and I decided to take a semester off to work and think about my college career. Over the semester I had a lot of things happen that I will remember. Most recent was over the break I had a friend visit from Rochester New York. We decided to take my Jeep out in the woods to go off roading. To make a long story short we got stuck out in the middle of now where by ourselves. As we start to walk towards civilization we find a Penn Dot bull dozer. We take a chance and look for the keys. Behind the seat there they are, we start it up and drive off to pull my car out. By the end of the day, right before it gets dark we get the car out and drive home covered in mud.

Proposal for defintion paper!

Since the founding of the United States in 1776 freedom of speech has always been one of the main points that come to mind when teaching about the history of the country. It is the first amendment in our constitution, the first thing a lot of people will do to define an argument. The definition of the term seems so simple but a lot of times people will have trouble deciding when, where, and who can use the right of free speech. I remember seeing a picture of a sign in montana that read “Free speech area” this area was designed for people to speak out therefore expression there right as an American citizen. The question that rises in my mind is freedom of speech is an American right, why should you have to have a designated place to speak out. Even in schools, students will argue the right that they can say what ever they want because of the 1st amendment, but that is not always true. What I think is a simple definition can entirely explain such a broad term with so much meaning. Freedom of speech is not just in words but is in thought ,pictures, music, it is all around. The clothes you wear can depict a lot about your views on a topic that could be controversial. There are such institutions that will not allow you to wear offensive materials that can be seen by everyone. One of the most dramatic changes that no one who wrote the constitution thought of because it didn’t exist was the internet. This place can be seen by and one with access which at this day in age is almost anyone. Does the internet need limits or is it the unlimited free speech area where you can access the information by typing in a few words. Groups can network together and express the views whether be think it is write of wrong. Freedom of speech even though it is the first and seems to be the most simple amendment brings about many arguments about is simple definition, which even talking about would be considered free speech?

2/6/06 DEFINITION PAPER RESPONSE!
Response by SnapKrackelPop. First I'm going to say, that I think freedom of speech is the freedom to say what you want as long as it doesn't disrupt or harm anyone else. For example, a person is not aloud to run into a very public crowded area and scream FIRE because this would cause harm to people. By doing this, people would panic and run out of the building while also pushing people down and stomping on them. There is freedom of speech to a certain extent, if everyone could say whatever they wanted, the United States would be chaos. I believe the claim is, freedom of speech (the first ammendment) has many restrictions. In other words, a person can not say whatever they want. When people think of this trem literally it seems as if this is all a lie, but when thinking of it logically, it is all about having a unique opinion and letting the public be its own and not what someone else wants them to be. The reason's that back this up include the example of the sign that said "Free Speech Area." If the whole united states is an area of free speech, then why would there need to be a sign saying that the small area in the united states has free speech. Does that place have extra free speech? The warrent for this reason would be that, a person would have to believe that they actually did get free speech in America to even think that this was an inappropriate sign. Another reason that was stated was about the internet. Does the internet really need restrictions of there is freedom of speech. The internet can't really ever have restrictions, because as soon as a website is knocked out, a new one can be made. No matter how many restrictions there are, they will always be broken. I believe that it is true that everyone in the United States has freedom of speech. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, they have the right to think what they want, wear what they want and talk about what they want. Another argument that should be considered, is when people do protest, like the one from Birmingham. Those people were supposed to have freedom of speech and they were hit and bit by policemen and dogs. This is not freedom of speech. Also in school's many students do not have freedom of speech. When students are talking about something, even something that wont harm anyone else and a teacher has a problem with, the student will be yelled at and told they can't talk that way (atleast in my high school they did). I don't know if freedom of speech only applies to adults or if it applies to everyone. Although this might have to do with the own school laws, but I thought the freedoms of America still applied in schools. I also noticed there were a lot of typo's, I don't know if you re-read the proposal to check, but I fixed the ones I saw. When talking about the clothing, it's wear not where (just incase you use that in your actual essay :).

Response to ErockBlog

Claim: The definiion of a hate crime needs to be less broad because it is a crime.
Reasons:Most hate crimes are actually federral crimes.
Warrants: Since there is federal punishment of a hatecrime there should be a federal definition.
18 states have laws against homosexual hate crimes.
Counter arguements: Hate crimes are so different in each case that there can't be one definition.
Overall: i think that a hate crime can be defined in one defintion a punishment can vary within the definition.

"Evaluation Proposal."

I have decided to write my Evaluation paper on off campus living. The advantages to living off campus are tremdous the parking, moblity and freedom to independent. I can live with my friends in our house togther and we all fix it up togther and beging to live on our own. Our house is the ulitmate college house we have three floors and everyone has their own room. We have a pooltable and a poker room also a great yard with Ow. Houtz across the street. I can get to campus by bus with ease from west campus. I able to lving inpendently and manage my school work. I belive also that you get a better college expericence by being out of the house.

My America!

Andrew Sullivans's " My America" Bring thought to what makes america a great place to live and to be able have a broad view of your suroundings. His good example is beging able to say Hello to a person you pass on the street with out even think twice about it. Also he states in the end that even though we sometimes try to be polictally control in the end we can always sit down and give thanks to what we are allowed to decide on. My america explains the good and the bad of the america people and the ways think are thought of differently because the way we were brought up compared to other country's. Sullivan's response is giving thanks to america but also suddley critzing the narrow views of the national and
its effects on the rest of the world.

Evaluation Paper!

Living off Campus

My college experience has really been enhanced by the house that I live in. The house itself is well built and has everything that my friends and I need. My roommates also really improve the house. The overall condition of the house and all the factors that affect its final impression are also important.

My close friend Joe and I were looking for a place to live together when we came across 121 South Butz Street. Not only was the house for rent but it was also for sale. When looking at the house to rent both of our parents decided that it would be nice to own. This way we would not have to pay rent and we could also do what we want with the house. This was the best news I could hear with regards to renting a house. I decided that dorm living was for me I wanted to be able to have my own room and not be distracted by noise in the dorms hall ways. Dorms can also be good though and give you the college experience to meet new people from all different places from all over the world. Dorm living allows you to have some freedom but also limitations in where and what you can do. It is more of a specfic route {??} to be on, eating on a meal plan and having less resonsiblitys responsibilities of living completely on your own.

The house that we live in is a large eight bedroom four story house on the west side of town, right on the edge of student housing. The house from the outside is blue with a large back and front porch. These porches provide a great place to hangout on summer days and nights. As you move inside you see a very large kitchen that provides for some great home cooked meals with the rest of my roommates. The rest of the downstairs is broken up into two large living rooms, both with couches and a dart board. These are fun places to hang out in when the weather is in climate and also give our friends a nice place to pass out at the end of the night. In the corner of the one living room is the gem of the house, our spiral staircase that leads to the basement. Here we spend a lot of our time in front of our brand new fifty-four inch TV. The downstairs is the most unrefined part of the house, but it also provides a sanctuary to get away from the real world for a while and be in solitude. As you head back upstairs to the second floor, you see two bathrooms, our laundry room, as well as 3 of my roommate’s bedrooms. Once finally on the third floor you get to see my bedroom as well as Joe’s room. I have a very big room with brand new wall-to-wall carpet, which among other things really makes living in this house better than most anywhere else you can live.

It is hard for me to express in words the quality of the house that we are living in. Due to its enormous size, the house really has a feel of being a frat house, but at the same time it also gives you the chance to find a quiet retreat and get away from everything when needed. The frat house mentality also carries over to the fact that there is always something going on, which keeps you going and always having fun. There is never a dull moment in the house. Whether setting off mortar fireworks at three in the morning and having the cops come or just playing video games, you never get bored. Since our parents own the house there is no need to feel like you have to report to a land lord or worry about messing up the house. We can nail whatever we want into the walls and do what we want to the yard and we won’t be getting in trouble or losing our “security deposit”.

I really believe that our house has one of the best locations in town. Getting to class is pretty easy because we are only a short ten-minute walk from campus. Our house is located on the west end of town which gives us the chance to be far enough from downtown that we do not always have to party if we don’t want to. On the other hand, our location is also close enough that people will come if and when we do happen to have a party. We are conveniently across the street from OW Houtz, which is a full service grocery and hardware store if we ever need anything.

One main function of the house that I have yet to discuss is my roommates. I live with 5 of the best roommates that anyone could ever ask for. Each roommate really has his own personality that makes the house truly interesting. It is also nice that we really seem to mesh and seldom get on each others nerves, but also can have fun with each other. Living with three of these guys last semester I almost feel like I have a brotherly feel with them getting into silly trivial arguments about what beer is better or who is better at a particular video game. Just the little things these guys do make living here so much fun. You can always count on Addison our “Molly Maid service” to clean up whenever it needs to be done or Dag to be there to crack jokes with. I truly believe that if we would not be living in such a high class house, I could still have a great time living anywhere with these guys.

The house that I live in is one of the most exciting and fun times that I could ask for. Your friends and your house are supposed to be a retreat from the true college life of going to class and work every day. Every time I come into this house, it is a big stress reliever from laughing with a roommate or watching TV relaxing. I could have chosen to live at home with my parents or in an apartment in beaver canyon, but there is no way that I could have this much fun and truly enjoy my college life anywhere else.

Political Learning!

I beleive that alot of politcal learning is influenced by your parents growing up even if you don't realize it. Alot of kids will be vote just like their parents in their first election because they don't know any better. Alot of things can be passed down through the generations of your family, even politics. Most teens don't begin to think on there own until college and sometimes then might differ from their upbrings but still not know where their lying in poltics. Alot of bias is out there it is very hard to make decisions with out beging bias or just doing what is nature to you with out thinking. I think that as teens stay focused and pay attention to all sides and opinions out there political bias can be avoided.

Casual Argument!

Growing up in State College Penn State University has always been around. Bringing up a large population more venues, events and social scenes. On the other had Penn State is one of the largest party schools in America and therefore bringing us a earlier and more temptation to underage drink. My paper will argue the affects of underage drinking on young teens. Also it will compair the amounts of affects for people in happy valley. Questions will be how early do kids drink? How does it affect your social, and school life. Has it gotten you in trouble with the law or your parents? Underage drinking is looked down on by most parents but some don't seem to care and sometimes the way you are raised can make a difference in binge drinking. Underage drinking happens every weekend in State College is it a problem or isn't it?

"Communist Manifesto"

Communisum is a sorta of government that has been looked down upon for years by the United States. Fidel Casto has been a threat to the american government since the 1960's during the Cuban Missle Crisis. Communisum is not the most fair and just government but it alot people do not desire as many material things. In a communist government alot of things are supplied for you a house, car, grocery money etc. Helping elminate all of the classes of people. I am not saying this a good thing but alot of violence can come from jealously, greed and hate. On the other hand communisum gives no freedom to its people and they are not able to make alot of choices or have a say in their government. Most importantly the election process is not fair. Democracey in america helps to make it a better and more equal nation, but it doesn't me that Communisum must be out lawed every where.

Caual Paper!

Growing up in Happy Valley seems to be one of the things that people will never forget and will always look back on for the rest of their lives as a good childhood. State College is a place that has that small town feel but also has a lot going on mainly because of Penn State University. Penn State is one of the largest school in the United States with almost 50,000 students every year. With all the sporting events and live concerts Penn State brings a lot of venues for college students and everyone that lives here. Penn State’s football season happens every fall semester bringing great games and lots of tailgating. Along with that comes a lot of drinking and parties. Penn State is know to be one of the biggest party schools in the big ten Big Ten. Drinking happens ever every weekend at Penn State in every bar and in every college dorm and apartment. The number of underage drinking has decreased since the 80's when the minium age was raise raised. Although However that did not affect the amount as much as hoped, almost 10.9 million aged from 12-20 years old underage drink. Adolescent behavior is more affected by alcohol than a adult, people aged from 10-24 years homicide and suicide rates were alcohol related incidents. Drinking underage has also resulted in more violence aggression and sexual assault in adolescent years.

In recent years more has come to research what can be done limit underage drinking instead of not allowing it at all, lets face it highschool teens are gonna drink. Other countries that have younger drinking ages, {Delete the comma.} have been looked at as sensible drinking. In France kids are served wine with dinner at a young age therefore making drinking a part of their culture. As compared to adolescents in the United stats States that are very heavy drinkers. In recent collection of data taken from highschool seniors 60% of students have been drunk in the last two weeks. Only 4% said they have ability to stop drinking before get getting intoxicated. Alcohol related problems are more common is in teens that in adults. Adults can be a huge influence if there kids will drink or do not drink. Many parents drinking habits can affect the way there children think about alcohol. Increased alcohol abuse in households can make children think its right or wrong. Violence can be a huge part in the factor, if a child has suffered abuse or neglect due to drinking then if could me that teen might avoid drinking. Most children have consumed alcohol with parents by age 13, a surprising number are allowed to drink at home. Alcohol consumption can be regulated by parents but not in all social settings, therefore allowing for binge drinking to take affect when parents are not present.

Growing up brings changes and decisions to make in everyday life. Highschool has to be one of these most important times that drinking can come into affect. By senior year of highschool over 75% of the class has had a alcoholic beverage or gotten drunk with in the past 2weeks in a recent survey. Personally growing up in happy valley drink played a huge part in your social life during highschool. Almost every weekend drinking was involved, parties or just with a couple of friends it was frequent. The affect of growing up in State College and drinking doesn’t affect your grades or social life but does lead to fines and criminal punishment. About 85% of Penn State students have received a underage drinking violation by the time they turn 21 years of age. The average fine for underage drinking is 350$ and the second offense is 650$. If 85% of such a large campus such as Penn State pay those fines that quite the income for the state. Living here during highschool only increases that factor. Drinking can be related to cause many of the criminal activities over the years. Riots have broken out in downtown State college and have even caused deaths of Penn State students. The state spends thousands upon thousands of dollars every year to help control limit of alcohol. Alcohol consumption is causing problems but is also a huge ever growing business. That’s why its not completely illegal to drink, police just want to limit and control dangerous drink habits to keep other safe in the community.

The relation ship between drinking and the affects on underage it seen in many different ways, in some aspects it’s a lesson learned in life such as a lot of other experiences. On the other hand its trouble for the teens and the community surrounding them. Drinking should slowly be introduced introduce into adolescence to limit the affects of binge drinking a negative influences on the he or she and its peers. New laws are being made every year to help this and parents help in raising there kids by talking to their kids about drinking. Underage drinking has been around for decades even though the age has changed. It has been an on going learning experience for teens to make the right choices not only about drinking but life in general. The affects effects will change and vary person to person in negative or positive ways but will be consistent in society today.

Proposal Paper!

Up The Age

A rising concern among both teenagers and parents today are the number of teens dying in car accidents. The inexperience of young drivers causes a lot of these accidents. Being a young driver brings new responsibilities and temptations every time a new driver gets on the road. Nearly daily we’re hearing of teenagers within our community either dying in a fatal crashes or being rushed to the emergency room. Most of these fatal accidents are caused by wreck less or careless driving, which if common at a young age. Many of these could be prevented if we took into account the driving age. The leading cause of death for people from 15 to 20 years old is motor vehicle accidents (www.madd.org) and 45% of the time the teens in crashes had youth passengers in the automobile (www.madd.org). Teenagers will feel a lot of pressure to drive fast or aggressive with their peers in the car. A way to reduce the number of teenagers who die each year from car accidents is to increase the age which teens are able to drive. Do you honestly think teenagers are ready to start driving at the ripe young age of 16? I say no. Nearly half of the fatal, single car crashes involved a 16 year old driver while 65% of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager was driving (www.caraccident.com). Not only are we losing the drivers of vehicles, innocent passengers are dying as well. Also other motorists on the road can be involved in the accidents, causing inccidents deaths.
Many teens are going to argue this issue, however, it’s going to be saving numerous lives in the long run. Most teenagers think that 16 is fine age to start driving and the age should not be raised. They will say that if not their fault that someone before them abused the right to drive. The requirements to recive you license could be raised making it harded to achieve a license, more experience on the road would help to educate and improve the driving skills of an adolesent driver. Eighteen, in my opinion would be the appropriate age for teens to get there license. Holding back the license till then will allow the teens to mature more, and also allowing us to educate them more on driving itself. More helpful solutions to increasing the driving age is to have better education techniques such as driving schools, hands-on driving activities, and better in classroom lectures before teens are able to obtain their license.
Education plays a large that role in our driving. During Drivers Education in high school many teenagers only learn speeding is bad, how to parallel park, and not to drink and drive; we need more. Teenagers should be enrolled in a driving school before becoming eligible to get their license or within the first three month of having it. The driving schools have hands on activities to teach teens how to keep their car in better control. The activities which the school focuses on are skid control, high speed breaking/lane change, and wet surfaces. The skid car is fitted with outriggers. The instructor inside the vehicle has a control panel to put the car into skids. The car never exceeds ten miles per hour, however, the skid feels as though you’re going approximately forty to fifty miles per hour. This significantly helps teens learn how to keep a vehicle under better control if they were to encounter a skid on the road. High speed braking and lane changing is meant to help teens understand braking when doing quick maneuvers to avoid an on-road obstacle. To practice this, students line up, one at a time, about thirty feet from three traffic lights. They separate the traffic lights into three lanes using orange cones. When you proceed through all the lights are green, then two change red and it’s up to the student to keep the car in control and move into the lane where the light is green and stop immediately. For the wet surface training you move onto a flat piece of pavement, which has a lane outlined in cones with a small turn within it. The surface is wet, and then you speed up in the car, hit the brakes, and learn how to keep the car under control on a wet area going around a turn. A driving school which has these hands on activities is the Middle-Ohio Sports Car Course which can be seen at www.midohio.com.
Another aspect which is contributing to teen deaths in crashes is the consumption of alcohol. Twenty-five percent of 15 to 20 year-old drivers killed in car accidents had been drinking. Nine percent of then were intoxicated (www.madd.org ). If so many teens are driving under the influence, we should set up more DUI check points. This way teens will either be caught and learn the dangers of drinking and driving or not even drink at all knowing the consequences. Forty-three percent of teenage car crashes occurred between 9 PM and 6 AM (www.madd.org). The hours of 9 PM and 6AM maybe a good time to set up check points since you have an idea when the accidents are happening.
Teens age 15-20 years old, make up 6.7% of the total driving population in this country but are involved in 14% of all fatal crashes (www.caraccident.com). With this knowledge I feel there is evidence you need to increase the driving age. Unless there is something done, how are we going to prevent so many teen deaths?
