“Trying to form a utopia is like trying to close a revolving door…It won't work.” –Diana606 (Junior Student)

In a college discussion that can be found on College Confidential Online, many students are having an interactive debate about if ending poverty is achievable. One individual said this would form a type of utopia to have no existing poverty in our society. One particular student, Diana606, replied by saying that “Trying to form a utopia is like trying to close a revolving door…It won't work.” This analogy is forceful, yet false. She is implying many aspects and ideas about a utopia in only one statement. Mainly, her message is that a utopia is never achievable. Contrary, a utopia is an individual’s state of mind where he/she is mentally or physically in a place of his/her own perfection. This place is real and existent.

A revolving door is something that keeps on moving. It is not a set environment. The door is like a wheel which you cannot close off because of all of its openings. There are several notches in the door for people to go in, which makes closing the door impossible. When people go through it, it can go fast, slow, get stuck, or not move at all. It does not exist in one state. It is something different for everyone. Anyone can go through a revolving door and it will never have the same result as the previous.

A utopia is just the opposite of a revolving door. A utopia is a set environment or a state of mind. It is only one place and it is real. If it was not real, then is would be called a “wish” or a “desire.” A “wish” or a “desire” is an idea only in someone’s mind that one would want to have. It is a type of dream. Unlike the revolving door, a utopia does exist in one state. It is a single environment based on someone’s interests and background that creates that place to be perfect for them. They are content in their own tranquil environment. There would not want to be in any other place then where they were completely saitified. They would be in an emotional state of happiness.

To defend the analogy given by Diana606, there are things that a revolving door and a utopia have in common that would support her idea. First, a utopia cannot be the same for everyone which is just like a revolving door. When it goes fast for one person, opposed to another, each person has a different interaction with the door. A person can have his own unique revolution compared to another individual’s revolution. The same is with a utopia. Everyone has their own individual utopia that cannot be enjoyed on the same level by any one else. Second, everyone has a specific spot in a revolving door which is like how everyone has a specific utopia. The person’s own perfection is so unique that it could never be copied. In a revolving door, the notches are divided off by glass. Everyone is in a separate space, but they are all sharing in the common goal to get inside. For a utopia, everyone has a separate place as well, while sharing the same common goal of wanting to be their perfection. Unfortunately, this is not what Diana606 was trying to relay across to her audience. She made her analogy about closing the door, not about the purpose of a revolving door. Her analogy should have been stated differently to of been true.

With comparing two different things in an analogy, it is difficult to find something that has a big enough similarity that can be seen by all. The audience is supposed to be able to see the word or idea that the person is trying to portray in a different light because of the object or event the person compared it to. If the audience is given a false analogy or one with too many flaws, it only creates confusion and dissatisfaction. Diana606’s analogy is a perfect example of an analogy that can be easily attacked because of its flaws. A utopia is something real and existing in the world for everyone. If they have not found it yet, then it is a different issue, but their utopia is still out there in the world. One cannot say that a utopia is like trying to close a revolving door because closing a revolving door is impossible. Utopias are possible and that is one of the main characteristics of a utopia.
