In 1978, Randal Kleiser directed a musical romance of two teenagers in love in a movie called Grease. This movie is filled with unforgettable chorography, songs, and comedy while a high school couple tries to make it through their Senior year. Grease is an extraordinary picture, because its humor, catchy tunes, and storyline keep the audience intrigued and waiting on the edge of their seat for the next song to break out.
Grease starts out with Danny, played by John Travolta, meeting Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John, during the summer after their Junior year. They soon experience a summer fling and fall for each other. When the summer is over, they end up going their separate ways. Coincidentally, Sandy moves to the same neighborhood as Danny and attends his high school, Rydell High. Danny is the leader of the group of “cool” guys, the T Birds, at Rydell. This group hangs out with the corresponding “cool” girl group, the Pink Ladies. Sandy does not fit into Rydell right away, but the Pink Ladies soon accept her after some hardships. Danny and Sandy experience trouble in their relationship due to their new environment, peers, jealousy, and many other factors of being a teenager in high school. Many events happen throughout their attempt for teenage love, such as a car race against a rival high school gang, the Scorpions, a National Dance Off televised at Rydell High, and Graduation. Throughout the movie, all of these events are displayed to the audience through chorography, music, singing, and humor.
This movie has been successful over the years starting first with its release. It is known throughout the generations as a musical love story of Danny and Sandy in high school. The songs and signature dance moves are known by millions and have made an effect on other movies following it. Some catchy lines from the movie that helps to keep the popularity of the movie going today are “Grease is the word,” "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee, Blessed with my virginity,” and “Go Grease Lightening.”
The power of the musical and dancing is a vital factor in the success of this movie. The songs that are in the movie are still being played today. Upon hearing one of these songs, the audience knows that it is from this hit movie and every detail that lead up to that song. These songs work as dialogue in the movie while putting more power and emphasis into where the story is going.
The storyline itself is particularly interesting to an audience directed towards teenagers and middle age adults. The obstacles that the couple encounters are ones that people of those age groups can relate to. In one scene, Danny tries out for the track team just to impress Sandy. With this strong passion to win back Sandy, the audience can relate to it because they probably had past experiences of trying to win someone’s affection. Cliques and other student groups that are throughout a high school are also a key part of this movie. The cliques of the T Birds, the Pink Ladies, and the Scorpions are very appealing to an audience who came across groups like this in their own high school experience. On the other hand, some individuals believe that this movie is not one that should be watched over one time. Some believe it is just John Travolta singing the whole time while swinging his hips to a goofy tempo. Others believe that it is a story of a bunch of 30 year olds in high school whining about love and which dress to wear to the dance. People think this way if they do not look into the creativity and effort that was put into each frame and selection of songs. The underlying message of innocence and desire is embedded in the movie.
Personally, I believe that Grease is a classic movie that can be watched countless times while still being able to find something new in it every time. Every time I watch it, I hear a new lyric that relates to something else in the movie that I never heard before or I see a new dance break that seems like I am watching it for the every first time. A stereotypical love movie has a new twist by being a musical in the movie Grease. Grease’s story is appealing to me on the musical and creative level, as well as the story level. I recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates creativity, love, and cinema.
Grease is a classic movie that has contributed to the movie scene in many aspects. It is a must see movie and one that will always be quoted by people across the globe. Grease has an innocent vibe that gives the watcher hope while he/she enjoys the illustration of emotions of the characters through their song and dance. Grease is a success and should be noted as one throughout movie history.
