On October 11, 2005, I attended the National Coming Out Day Rally on the Old Main steps for an assignment I had in my SOC119 class. Greeted by rainbow balloons and individuals handing out rainbow flags and Human Rights stickers, I knew that I had really stepped outside of my own comfort zone into something I have never experienced before. Students and leaders from Penn State spoke about LGBTA issues. After a quick introduction about the founding of this day in 1987, four speakers came up to talk about Gay Pride and Rights. As I listened to their stories, I always had a question of how whenever homosexuality came up why did AIDS? Isn’t AIDS just a sexual disease that anyone can acquire? Why is it always brought up between gay couples? So, then I came to the conclusion that I really did not know anything about AIDS.
For my Final Project, I want to do an argument about AIDS and Free Testing. I am not going to argue for Free Testing at PSU because there already is Free Testing (even thought it was suspended through all of October). I am going to argue why people should go to the Free Testing, instead of them arguing about their confidentiality and fear that they might have. With that goal in mind, I will address what AIDS and the HIV test really is (definitional argument), what the causes of the disease are (causal argument), the current system of testing at PSU (evaluation argument), and other aspects that I might stumble on while researching the topic further. This subject matters to everyone at PSU because AIDS is a growing problem in the world today. It is spreading while killing off thousands while there is still no cure.
