I'm using a USA TODAY Snapshot from the Thursday, January 19th paper, on the cover of the LIFE section, entitled "Where Miss Americas hail from". As a woman and a biology major...I'm thrilled. According to the Snapshot, only 7 states are represented: California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Mississippi with 6, 6, 5, 5, 4, 4, and 4 winners, respectively.

The article's claims are that these 7 states must produce more attractive, uselessly talented women than the other 43 states. It calls to action women in such states as Alaska, Vermont, and Rhode Island to drop 30 pounds and sign up for this year's baton twirling class. It also supports the generally known fact that California women are prettier. Although it does bring up a suprising point with Ohio, who, although they tied with California for 6 Miss Americas, one of those 6 won two years in a row, so really, Ohio is better.

My first claim is that this statistic is useless and that now I'm dumber for having noticed it. My second claim is that this statistic leads the reader to infer that the Miss American pageant discriminates, looking for that down home on the ranch girl with blonde pigtails to be the all American face of beauty. The stats are decorated with red white and blue stars, banners, and a nostalgic picture of the long legged girl in stilletos and hot pants - what I call self-incriminating by the women of today: I claim thirdly to let the Miss America pageant die and get it out of the national news. Women wanted to be put into the Universities and the work force, they got it, and once there proceeded to complain about everything under the sun and then go home and watch the Miss America beauty pageant on tv? Fourthly, I claim that I should have picked a less pointless, more meaningful stat, and regret that I wasted so much of your time telling you about the Miss America pageant, whose viewer range is typically aged 4 through 7. Many apologies.

PS Dear Kem, I also apologize for the lateness of this :/ Please don't judge me I'll never do it again. <3 Maryjo
