So, since we have to have a fourth blog for each week, I decided to pick a topic that I could write about every week. So for the next few weeks my fourth blogs are going to be about one of my favorite television shows, ABC’s the Bachelor. This year the show is in Paris and the Bachelor is an emergency room doctor, so right away I know the show is going to keep me interested from week to week. Last week was the first episode, and it was completely crazy. A disgruntled contestant confronted the Bachelor after he decided not to keep her on the show. This woman should be completely embarrassed because she made a fool out of herself. This week, on the second episode, another woman embarrassed herself by making fake teeth out of an orange peel, and then trying to be funny while she was on her date. I felt really bad for her. Needless to say, the Bachelor, Travis, did not choose to give her a rose, which would permit her to remain on the show.
Using the USA Today Snapshot page I chose to look at sports-related statistics. The statistics provided were about the number of health club members over the age of six in a particular state. The statistics given were as follows: 20.9% of state residents over the age of six belonged to a gym in Delaware, 20.1% of state residents over the age of six belonged to a gym in Colorado, and 18.9% of residents over the age of six belonged to a gym in California. One possible claim these statistics are making is that more residents in Delaware care about being healthy and being in shape than the residents in the other two states do. A second possible claim is that Delaware has the best health clubs in the country, which is why so many of the residents there belong to a gym. Finally, a third possible claim is that there are more people in Delaware going to a gym than there are in California. However, I have to wonder, isn’t the state of California’s population a lot larger than the state of Delaware’s population? So while the statistic shows that Delaware has a higher percentage of its residents belonging to health clubs compared to California’s residents, couldn’t the total number of people belonging to health clubs in California actually exceed that of Delaware’s total number of residents? Also, the picture of the muscular arm on the chart claims that most people go to the gym to lift weights rather than to do aerobic exercise.
Hello, my name is Emily Chiappini, but people usually call me Chip or Em. I was brought into this world June 30, 1986, and I've been loving it ever since. Like some people I started off in the Eberly College of Science my first semester, but I intend to switch into the Smeal College of Business. I'm currently an intended Biology major but I am looking into a career in accounting. I am a very unique individual who likes to have fun, while not forgetting my priorities. Track is a hobby that I have really enjoyed and excelled in within the past couple years. I chose Penn State because of its solid reputation and countless opportunities. With all of that being said, I look forward to getting to know more about everyone in this class, while getting to know myself a little better as well.
Martin Luther King’s letter from Birmingham jail provoked several questions in me. One question arose from his statement about extremists. Just like Martin Luther King, when I first hear the word extremist I think of its negative connotation. When I hear this word I think of the people that fly planes into buildings and bomb buses. I even think of how being extremely overweight or underweight is undesirable, and the phrase “everything in moderation” comes to my mind. I never thought of it the way Martin Luther began to think of it. Jesus was in fact and extremist for love, and I don’t see the problem with that. Perhaps being an extremist can be a good thing, depending on what one is an extremist for and the means for getting a point across. If it is all done in a safe manner then I no longer see what is wrong with being an extremist. If there is something that a person is so passionate about that they can be considered an extremist then why should they want to practice moderation when they have such strong convictions?
