The Longest Two Weeks of My Life.

Just like any other typical senior in High School, I was trying to relax and enjoy my last summer home before I was beginning a whole new life style. I am a part of the varsity Women's Soccer team here at Penn State. We are currently ranked as number 8 in the country and striving for a National Championship. Instead of going out, partying everynight, not coming home until early the next morning, I had a goal set infront of me. Not only did I have to be fit for pre-season enabling me to pass my fitness tests but I wanted to play. Don't get me wrong I definately went out a lot but it wasn't the same. I spent nights watching everyone have an amzing time but in the back of my head I knew that tommarrow morning I needed to get up early and run. Every other Penn State student didn't need to be up at school until August 26th. Myself as an athlete needed to be here August 8th, for pre-season. Leaving home wasn't easy especially leaving almost 3 weeks early, giving me only the month of July as my "summer" being that I graduated June 26th. From August 8th until our first game which was on August 26, it was by far the longest two weeks of my life. We had two-a-day practice sessions every day for two weeks straight. My long days consisted of waking up at 8 in the morning training for two hours, eating then practicing again for another two hours. Not to mention all the hard work that we endoured, Im preatty sure I was sore every single day. I slept every second I could because I was so tired from running so much. Each day felt like they would never end. My roomate and I were stuck watching every DVD out there. We had no internet or cable we didn't even have our TV's. It was so hot in our rooms and there was no AC. Our cell phones barely even got service so anytime we wanted to talk to someone we would have to go all the way outside and of course we were on the 3rd floor. As bad as all this seems, it was worth it. I passed my fitness tests, I'm playing in games and I feel as if I'm in the best shape I have ever been in.

The Most People I have seen in a Long Time

Today I went to the football game with all the girls on my soccer team, we were presented in between the 3rd and 4th quater for winning the Big Ten league. Well since Iam a freshman we weren't allowed to go on the field because we really didn't help win it, being that it is our first year here. I have never been to a football game here but I have heard so many things about it. I was really excited to see what it looked like. When I walked into the stadium I was completely taken back by how many people were actually there. It was the most people I have seen in a long time. I got the chills as I was walking to my seat, I couldn't believe how many people were there and how they were completely obsessed with Penn State. Each and every person had so much pride in our school, I loved it. Thankfully we won, even though I was completely off about predicting the score.

I arrived at Penn State on 8/29/05 and it has already become my second home. My roommate was here for summer classes, and his experience aided in my transition. The first night I was here, my roommate and the friends he acquired over the summer session took me downtown. Shortly after we were on are on way to a phrat party, my first phrat party ever. Not knowing what to expect, I decided to walk around with a cup and not drink. I just blended in and surveyed the scene. It lived up to the standard phrat party persona that you would see in a movie. Since then I have met a couple of the brothers at the fraternity and engaged in a heart to heart talk with them about pledging and girls. The only problem is that the people I have been meeting up here are all guys and that is inspiration enough for one of my future wikis to be a classified add.

I come from a family that people would say "bleeds blue and white." My

father is a Penn State alumnus and ever since my brother was little he knew

that he wanted to attend Penn State as well. It would only make sense that I

too would attend Penn State University when I was old enough. For me,

however, it was a different story.

It was the summer of 2004 and I along with everyone else who would be a

senior in high school started looking at colleges to attend. At first I refused

to look at Penn State and did not want to follow in my father and brother's

footsteps. People would ask if I was going to Penn State and I would reply

with a "never would I go there." As I continued to search for colleges

which had my major, hotel, restaurant, and institutional management, none of the

ones I looked at really made me want to go there. I liked them but I just could

not see myself as a student there. After visiting several colleges, I began

to get discouraged, worrying that I would not find a college that fit me. One

day something happened and I decided that I wanted to look at Penn State.

That day was the day my family moved my brother in freshmen year. It was a

beautiful day outside, the sun was shining and excitement and anticipation was

in the air because of all the incoming freshmen moving in. Walking around

that day was when I finally realized how beautiful Penn State really was and

started to appreciate everything it had to offer. My family was in disbelief at

my sudden change of heart but also happy that I was considering it. We went

and toured the campus and although I liked it I still did not know if Penn

State was the place for me. I was also looking at Widener, a school near

Philadelphia, which really appealed to me. I was leaning more towards Widener

than Penn State but I knew that I did not want to go far from home and

Widener was five hours away. Widener and Penn State are completely opposite

schools. Widener is near the city, has only about nine thousand students, and

has a rather small campus. Penn State, on the other hand, is a rural campus

located out by itself, has more then forty thousand students, and has a large

campus. Being five hours away from my family and friends was not for me so I

decided on Penn State. I was not completely sure about my final decision. I

thought that I still wanted to go to Widener even with the five hour drive. Now,

after being up here I could not picture myself anywhere else. I love

everything about Penn State. My before comment about never wanting to go to

Penn State has now turned into never would I want to go anywhere but Penn State.

For all my life, soccer has been the game I loved to play the most. When I was about 5, I started playing in the indoor YMCA league on Friday nights. If you have ever watched a 5-year-old YMCA league, you may have noticed that it was not the prettiest soccer you'll ever see. There would always be kids running in circles doing cartwheels or talking to their parents. Not very often would you see players actually 'playing' soccer, but it just so happens I was one of those kids who wasn't satisfied till I scored at least 3 goals.

These YMCA leagues went on for only a few more years till I was 8, which is when Travel soccer started along with a less committed, Saturday soccer league called Lebo Cup. There were 3 leagues that made up Lebo Cup, third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth, and lastly seventh and eighth. I played all six years and won the final tournament three of the years. The teams I was on consisted of mostly all my friends since my stepfather and my best friends dad were always coaches together. Because the games were on Saturdays, I was also allowed to play in a Travel league which was comprised of one to two practices a week with a game on Sunday. The games ranged from 15 minutes away to almost 2 and a half hours away. In order to play on this team, there was a try out which I anticipated every year because the Travel season was the most fun soccer that I had played up to that point in my life. For the Travel league, there was an A, B, and C team. Every year I tried out I made the A team up until I was 14. That year I tried out and thought I played well, but I guess I was wrong because the letter that I had received stated that I made the B team. Although I was very upset, I played the whole season and performed very well. The following season, which would be the last year that I could play Travel, I guess I played like my old self and made the A team once again. That year, we went to the final tournament of the year, Edinboro, and we won it all.

The next stage of soccer in my life was high school soccer. I had been looking forward to this my whole life, although I would have to go through dreaded preseason. For two weeks before the season started, we had three, two and half hour practice sessions a day. During the morning session, all we would do was run and do dribbling work. In the afternoon session, we would run for 15 minutes, then begin with dribbling, then move into passing and shooting games, and then at night we would play in actual game situations. As a freshman, I made the JV team, which was an excitement for me. I did not think I would make JV mainly because my then, 5'4" 135 lb frame, didn't help my game much. But my hard work paid off and I played in every game of the season and finished with 5 goals and a few assists. At the end of the season, the Varsity coach usually calls up 3 players from the JV team to help out with the varsity team for the playoffs and maybe even get in a game or two, which was kind of unlikely. Surprisingly, I was one of the call-ups so I got to travel with the Varsity team, who that year won WPIAL’s, which is a section of teams all from Western Pennsylvania. Although I did not play in any of the playoff games that year, I still got the gold medal that the rest of the team received.

The following year, which was my sophomore year in high school I made JV once again and was the captain of the team. The season went well; we went 14-5. I was called up to play on Varsity for a few regular season games. My junior was also a fun one. I made varsity and started as the right marking back every game of the season. In the playoffs we made it to the WPIAL finals but lost to our hometown rivals USC.

Last year, as a senior, was probably the most fun soccer that I had played in my life. Going into preseason, we were not ranked in WPIAL's. Our local newspaper didn't even believe we would have a winning season but we proved them wrong. As a senior captain, I helped lead my team to a 14-9-2 record, which doesn't really show how much we excelled. Against every team, we put up a hard fight. We played the number one team in the league twice. The first meeting we lost 4-1 but in the second game we tied 1-1. We made it to the playoffs but lost 3-1. By making it to the playoffs, we prove many people wrong. After the season, I was voted to the All-Section team by the coaches in our section.

Some people might not believe that last year was a success, but if you watched the games, you would see how far we came from the beginning of the season to the end. I am greatly going to miss playing soccer for a Mt. Lebanon team and I wouldn't give up playing for a team again for anything.
